DANCE ACROSS THE BORDERS
This program led by Rosa Elena Quintero Guillen has at its heart the Abya Yala dancers from the Abya Yala student house in Magdalena de Kino and the local youth of Magdalena de Kino.
The house is a place where girls are provided with the support they they need to be able to accomplished their dreams.
EDUCATION AND HEALTHY FOOD ACROSS THE BORDERS
Thanks to the support of many wonderful friends and from PROYECTO COMPASION ,The young women at the transition house are able to continue their highschool and secondary school plus they get to eat healthy meals every day. The program encourages them to continue with their schooling and seeks to teach them not only to have healthy meals but to learn how to grow their own foods.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION BASED ACTIVITIES AT THE QUICHE BIODIVERSITY CULTURAL CENTER (Rancho El Peñasco)
Bridges Across Borders has been a partner for many years in the environmental education based activities at QBCC/Rancho El Peñasco located just outside Magdalena de Kino, Sonora. School groups from kindergarten to university students have participated in these activities. The video below gives a good overview of the activities at the QBCC along with music classes offered at a local orphanage.
ALTERNATIVES TO VIOLENCE PROJECT (AVP) IN PRISON
Since 2008 Bridges Across Borders volunteers have facilitated workshops in the state prison near Magdalena de Kino, Sonora where hundreds of inmates have participated. These workshops are participatory in nature and include exercises, games, and other activities to help participants focus on the positive in themselves and life in general. Inmate participants have commented that the time spent in workshops is when they feel free from encarceration. A more detailed explanation of the AVP model can be found at avpusa.org. SUPPORT FOR ASILO SAN ANTONIO (COMMUNITY HOME FOR SENIOR CITIZENS AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITES) IN MAGDALENA DE KINO, SONORA
Bridges Across Borders hosts regular cultural activities at Asilo San Antonio such as seen in the video below and provides other support like visiting with residents, acquiring special wheelchairs from ARSOBO (arsobo.org) in Nogales, Sonora, etc. Also thanks to Ana Carrillo the salary of 2 young woman are being paid to work full time at the Asilo. These women has been supported from the time they were in orphanages, some completed her high school education, and now Bridges Across Borders is helping both to continue their education and with medical costs etc…
